The taste of the South of Tuscany

EXPLORE SANGIOVESE

Roccapesta

If we were to briefly define the philosophy of Leonardo and Alberto Tanzini, it will would be about their respect for the environment and the quest for the Sangiovese grape’s purest expression.

In 2003, father and son made the acquisition of this magnificent estate located in the south-west of Tuscany, in the town of Scansano in the centre of the Morellino di Scansano appellation. They quickly undertook a major transformation of the viticultural practices and increased the size of the vineyard area. Much research and analysis were done in order to find the best combination between the grape variety (clone), the rootstock and soil. Today Roccapesta has more than 20 hectares of vineyards and favours an organic approach to viticulture. The estate grows eight different kinds of Sangiovese, but also produces Ciliegiolo, Alicante, Pugnitello, Syrah and Petit Verdot.

After more than 15 years of efforts and considerable investments, the Tanzini family is gaining awareness and the wine press is become more interested in their elegant and distinguished Roccapesta wines. Morellino is the name that is given to the Sangiovese in the Maremma area, hence the name of the appellation, Morellino di Scansano. It is located exactly between the Ligurian Sea and Mount Amiata and has a hybrid soil composed of sand, shale, limestone and volcanic deposits. The Morellino di Scansano DOC is located in the south of the sub-region of Maremma, directly between Mount Amiata and the Ligurian Sea. The land is beautiful and the climate is suitable for the production of great red wines. The list of those who have acquired land for vineyards or the planting of vines grapes in recent years is impressive and includes, of course, prestigious names from Tuscan viticulture. Due to its geographical location, its soil is an amalgam of sand, shale, limestone and volcanic deposits that can vary considerably from one estate to another.
