San Leonardo

San Leonardo is an iconic estate in the Lagarina Valley of Trentino, founded around the 12th century and long held by the historic Guerrieri Gonzaga family. Over 30 hectares of vineyards are planted in gravelly, sandy and chalky soils at the foot of Monte Baldo, creating optimal conditions for Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Carmenère—planted since the 19th century to define the estate’s Bordeaux‑style blend. The winery practices organic viticulture, certified in 2018 and has been recognised as a “Friend of Biodiversity” for its ecological commitment.

Winemaking is meticulous and low‑intervention: spontaneous fermentations in concrete vats, followed by at least 24 months of ageing in small oak barrels. The result is the signature San Leonardo blend—celebrated by critics and even dubbed “the Sassicaia of the north” by James Suckling, and praised by Jancis Robinson and others for its elegance and remarkable consistency over decades.

Wine lovers on Reddit consistently echo this acclaim. One enthusiast called the San Leonardo 2010 Magnum “immense” with “complexity, structure and depth,” recommending it as a top Italian wine beyond Nebbiolo varieties. Another remarked: “If you have the chance, Tenuta San Leonardo is incredible value Bordeaux blend from the north of Italy. The ‘Sassicaia of the north’”.

San Leonardo remains a masterclass in place‑focused craftsmanship—time‑honoured, biodiverse, and deeply expressive of Trentino terroir.
