Discover Campania: A Wine Lover’s Journey Through Southern Italy

From the indigenous grapes of Irpinia to the people and places behind the wines, discover what makes Campania one of Italy’s most fascinating wine regions.

Campania, in southern Italy, is a region that deserves a place on every Italian wine lover’s radar. Known for its rich food culture, dramatic landscapes and remarkable indigenous grape varieties, it offers a world of discovery beyond its famous coastline.

As Italian Wine Ambassadors, we recently had the opportunity to explore Campania with a group of fellow ambassadors, thanks to Campania Wine and the Consorzio Tutela Vini della Campania. Our journey took us through vineyards, introduced us to passionate local producers and gave us the chance to experience the region through its wines, food and landscapes.

Irpinia: Where the Landscape Shapes the Wine

One of the highlights was Irpinia, Campania’s mountainous inland wine region. Here, rolling hills, vineyard-covered slopes and cooler growing conditions create a distinctive environment for some of southern Italy’s most exciting wines.

Altitude, soils and long growing seasons all contribute to the character of the region’s indigenous grapes. The result is a fascinating range of wines, from fresh, expressive whites to structured reds with impressive depth and ageing potential.

For wine lovers, Irpinia is a reminder that southern Italy is about far more than sunshine and full-bodied reds. Its whites, in particular, deserve plenty of attention.

Four Indigenous Grapes to Know plus Feature Winery, Feudi di San Gregorio.

Falanghina — Fresh, aromatic and lively

Falanghina is one of Campania’s best-known white grapes, producing wines that often show citrus, green apple and floral notes. Fresh and versatile, it’s a natural partner for seafood, fresh cheeses and lighter Italian dishes.

Fiano — Texture, elegance and complexity

Fiano di Avellino is one of the region’s standout white wines. Expect floral aromas, white fruit, freshness and texture, with the ability to develop additional complexity in the bottle.

Greco — Structure and savoury character

Greco di Tufo offers a different expression of Campania’s white wines. Often more structured and savoury, with bright acidity and a distinctive mineral character, it pairs beautifully with seafood and richer dishes.

Aglianico — The red grape with patience

Aglianico is the grape behind Taurasi DOCG, one of southern Italy’s most renowned red wines. With firm tannins, vibrant acidity and excellent ageing potential, Taurasi can reward patience with remarkable complexity.

Featured Winery: Feudi di San Gregorio — The Spirit of Irpinia

Nestled in Sorbo Serpico, in the heart of Irpinia, Feudi di San Gregorio has been telling the story of Campania through its wines since 1986. The winery has played an important role in championing southern Italy’s indigenous grape varieties, bringing renewed attention to grapes such as Fiano, Greco, Falanghina and Aglianico.

What makes Feudi particularly interesting is its connection to the landscape. Irpinia is a mountainous wine-growing area, with varied soils, different elevations and a climate quite distinct from the better-known coastal parts of Campania. These conditions help shape wines with freshness, structure and a distinctive sense of place.

Feudi di San Gregorio also brings a contemporary perspective to this rich winemaking heritage. Its striking winery, inaugurated in 2004, combines architecture, design and contemporary art, reflecting the estate’s belief that wine is as much about culture and creativity as it is about what ends up in the glass.

From expressive white wines such as Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo to the depth and ageing potential of Taurasi DOCG, Feudi offers a fascinating introduction to the diversity of Irpinia.

For anyone looking to understand Campania beyond its coastline, this is a producer worth discovering.

Why Visit Campania as a Wine Lover?

A wine region is about more than what’s in the glass. It’s about meeting the people who make the wines, discovering the landscapes that shape them, sitting down to local food and understanding the traditions that connect everything.

Campania offers all of this in abundance. Its indigenous grapes tell the story of a region with a strong identity, and its producers continue to show just how much diversity and character Italian wine has to offer.

We’ll be sharing more from our journey through Campania, including the wineries we visited and the producers who made this experience so special.

In the meantime, if you’re curious to explore these wines at home, our Feudi di San Gregorio Campania Discovery Pack brings together five wines that showcase the region, from sparkling Falanghina to Taurasi DOCG.
